Mourinho strongly denies he has had any contact from the Spanish tax authorities – and Spanish laws mean he would be unlikely to spend any time behind bars if convicted.
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi was sentenced to 21-months in May last year when he was found guilty of defrauding the tax-man of £3.5million.
But the Argentinian avoiding time in prison as Spanish law decrees any sentence under two years can be served as probation.
An Investigation by the Sunday Times claims to have unearthed a complex web of companies and accounts designed to squirrel away his millions and avoiding paying huge tax bills.
Mourinho was accused of defrauding £1,419,717.66 (€1,611,537) in 2011 and £1,491,601.39 (€1,693,133) in 2012 from his personal income tax (known as IRPF in Spain), while in charge of Los Blancos.
The leaked documents apparently reveal the former Chelsea boss and his financial advisers had conned the British authorities as well as the Spanish.
And Meg Hillier MP has urged British tax police – the HMRC – to follow Spain’s lead and crack down on British crooks.
The former chairwoman of the public accounts select committee said: “Given the clear progress from the Spanish authorities, it’s vital that HMRC is taking the same level of interest.”
The investigation centres around £10million he was paid in image rights at Stamford Bridge between 2004-07 and while at the Bernabeu between 2010-13.
A shell company called Koper Services – based in New Zealand – is at the centre of the investigation after it was revealed to be controlled by the 54-year-old Portuguese.
Mourinho’s lawyers told the Sunday Times back in December that the former Porto chief was in the clear.
They said: “The Spanish tax authorities confirmed in a certificate issued a few days ago that Mr Jose Mourinho is fully compliant and up to date with his tax obligations.”
But Madrid’s economic crime unit filed a complaint on Tuesday that has blown the case open once again.
